Togolese men in traditional dress. These man were recruited into the army in German-controlled Togoland around 1914. German colonialism in Africa lasted for thirty years, from 1884 to 1914. The Germans eventually withdrew after experiencing bloody wars with the natives and realizing that colonization was of little value to them.
